The Teaching

I give workshops in poetry and poetic essay. Workshops are structured to suit the needs of the participants, and usually involve a theoretical base.

That is, we may practice a particular form, and we may look to well-known poets for models and instruction. There is writing time and discussion.

One-to-One Mentoring
Sustained, personalised support for poets working on a collection, sequence, or developing a distinctive voice. Sessions by arrangement — in person in Dublin or online.

Group Workshops
Facilitated workshops for small groups of poets — exploring craft, form, the relationship between research and imagination, and the possibilities of the long-form sequence.

Manuscript Assessment
Detailed written feedback on a full or partial manuscript — for poets preparing a collection for submission to publishers or prizes, or seeking an honest external perspective.

The Approach

Principles that guide the work.

Empathy & Research
Máighréad's own process is, as she puts it, "a bit like method acting — a mix of empathy and research." She brings this to her teaching: understanding the subject from the inside, not merely describing it from outside.

Organic Form
The form of a poem should arise from its content, not be imposed upon it. Medbh is alert to the hidden formal logic in each poet's work and helps writers discover and trust that logic.

The Long-form & The Sequence
Much of Máighréad's own work is in long-form sequences demanding sustained immersion. She is particularly well-placed to support poets working in this ambitious register.

Honest, Constructive Response
Good mentoring requires honesty. Máighréad's feedback is direct and substantive — always in service of the work, never of the poet's comfort.
